What is Art Therapy?

Art therapy is a recognised form of psychotherapy that uses the creative processes of making art to facilitate healing and promote wellness. It is based on clinical evidence and research and is used in many healthcare settings. Art therapy is an individualised approach that acknowledges the unique needs and abilities of each person. Through art-making, clients can access parts of themselves that may be difficult to express in words, and develop a deeper understanding of their emotions. Art therapy can also enhance self-awareness and self-esteem, and help individuals to develop effective coping skills.

How is Art Therapy different to Art as Therapy?

While art therapy and art as therapy may seem similar, there are important differences between the two approaches. Art therapy involves a trained art psychotherapist who uses art-making as a tool to facilitate the therapeutic process. The therapist works collaboratively with service users to explore and understand the underlying psychological issues that may be impacting their mental health.

Art as therapy, on the other hand, is a self-directed process where the individual creates art for the purpose of self-expression and relaxation. While it can provide some therapeutic benefits, it is not a substitute for professional art therapy.

What is an Art Psychotherapist?

An art psychotherapist is a trained, qualified and HCPC registered mental health professional, who has a deep understanding of both art and psychology. They are trained to use art-making as a tool to facilitate the therapeutic process and work with individuals across all ages, from children to older adults. Art psychotherapists may work in a variety of settings, including hospitals, schools, mental health clinics, charities and private practice.

How can Art Therapy help?

Art therapy aims to provide a safe and supportive space for individuals to explore their thoughts and feelings. Through the creative process of making art, service users can gain insight into their emotions, behaviors, and relationships. They can develop coping skills and learn to express themselves in healthy ways. Art therapy can be particularly effective for individuals who may have difficulty expressing themselves verbally or who have experienced trauma.

However, it is important to note that art therapy is not a quick fix and requires ongoing commitment and effort from both the therapist and the client. It is a collaborative process that can lead to profound personal growth and transformation over time.

Who can benefit from Art Therapy?

Art therapy can benefit people of all ages and backgrounds. It can be particularly effective for people who may have difficulty expressing themselves verbally, such as children or individuals with developmental disabilities. Art therapy can also be helpful for those who have experienced trauma, as it can provide a safe and non-threatening way to explore and process difficult emotions.

Research has shown that art therapy can help reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression, improve self-esteem and self-awareness, and increase feelings of relaxation and stress relief. Art therapy can also provide a sense of empowerment and agency, as individuals are able to express themselves in a nonverbal way.
